Steps to Prevent Black Mold in Bathroom Paint

Black mold is a type of fungus that is harmful which usually grows in places due to accumulation of moisture and high humidity. When black mold becomes very visible on bathroom walls, then this should cause an alarm and you need to redo your wall paint in order to prevent the occurrence of black mold which can trigger allergies, asthma and other respiratory problems. There are simple steps that you can do in order to prevent black mold in bathroom paint. These practical steps are reasonable so that black mold is prevented. Prevention is better and less burdensome compared to black mold removal. And since black mold usually thrives in places where moisture is high, make sure that your bathroom walls are kept dry always.

One way to balance the humidity and keep your bathroom away from high moisture is to install exhaust fans. The functionality of these fans should never be underestimated. Aside from keeping the moisture lower in the bathroom area, exhaust fans expel bad odor and therefore cleaning the air you breathe. There should also be proper building maintenance in order to fix any damages or leaks which can produce mold build up not only on the walls but in some other areas of the bathroom.


Assuming that black mold build-up has occurred in your bathroom, this should be your concern and removal of fungus should be done the soonest time possible. You have to take necessary precautions when trying to remove the black mold. This fungus is hazardous to health and one should be careful when removing them because it can cause respiratory diseases and allergies.

The first thing that you should do is to dampen the area of the wall where you want to remove the paint infested with black mold. This is to prevent the fungus to be airborne and unknowingly inhaled. Put on your hand gloves and face mask as you begin the black mold removal. Wipe down the entire wall, even those that are not infested yet, with strong chlorine or bleach solution. You can leave the area for at least a day to wipe out the fungus and dry the walls.  After a day, wash down the bath walls, baseboards and other fixture with water and light soap solution to rinse off the chlorine thoroughly.

Ensure also that the bathroom area is dry before you apply new paint. There is actually mold-resistant paint available in the market which you can use in order to prevent the development of black mold. You can use this type of paint to make sure that black mold does not recur. If black mold does recur, you should contact a building maintenance to see if the walls have already absorbed moisture. Preventing black mold in the bathroom is very important to keep your family away from health hazards.

  1. Actually, we cannot completely get rid of mold manifestation in our home, but we can certainly get it under control. Here’s a small tip: if you have a shower, open the exhaust fan. If you don’t have any, just open the window, to allow the moisture, that allows black mold to thrive, to dissipate.
